More and more people are choosing the Florida Trail as their first thru hike. Something that was unheard of only a few years ago.

And it’s easy to see why.

Not only is the trail becoming more popular due to groups like FTThruhike being there for the hikers, but the timing works better for a lot of people who can’t get four to six months off in the middle of the year. This winter thru hike coincides with many people’s vacation time, and it only takes two months to complete.

Every trail is challenging in its own peculiar way, and the Florida Trail, despite being relatively flat, has its own set of obstacles that make it a unique experience among long distance trails. Walking in water, alligators, and bears, are just a few of the challenges, but it is no longer a lonely trail, unless you want it to be.

On my last hike through the Florida Trail I saw maybe five thru hikers the entire hike, so this time around I made it a point to be a little more social. And it has made all the difference in seeing the trail from an entirely new perspective.
