If I could offer all my books for free on Kindle and other eReaders, I would, but I haven’t quite figured that part out yet.

Much of my life has been spent outdoors, so it’s no surprise that my early writing leans heavily toward long-distance hiking and travel. You’ll find trail-specific journal entries categorized by route on the Hiking page, alongside reflections from the road, backcountry, and in-between.

I also publish both Fiction and Nonfiction here on the site, pieces that explore everything from modern solitude to conceptual finance.

For now, I’m offering a selection of free PDFs below. Each title is linked to a downloadable file, as is its cover image. Whether you’re between trails or just passing through, I hope you find something worth your time.

If you’d like to support my work and help keep this journey going, please visit the Books page and consider purchasing one.

Quest in the West: A Forrest Fenn Treasure Hunt

Now that the Forrest Fenn treasure has been located in Wyoming I have decided to share my journal from an attempt at locating the treasure many years ago.

To me, the story isn’t about the location of the treasure itself, but the adventure I had hitchhiking across the United States and exploring parts of Wyoming on foot.

If you are simply looking for what I considered to be the location of Forrest Fenn’s treasure then you can read the old blog post describing the location which was published back in April 2018, The Location of Forrest Fenn’s Treasure. The YouTube video can be found here.

Wandering is an unvarnished trail journal chronicling three months of restless movement across the western frontier. From a February start on the Pacific Crest Trail to hitchhiking detours, desert crossings through Joshua Tree, the toxic beauty of the Salton Sea, out to the Redwoods, and a final push along Oregon’s forests, this isn’t a story, it’s a transmission. A pocket-sized chronicle of dirtbag survival, handwritten plans scratched in the margins, and moments that don’t fit neatly in any book. No polish, no purpose beyond the next step. Just one man, one pack, and a restless urge to see what’s around the bend.

Backpacking Austin is a raw, unfiltered travelogue from the edges of society. With nothing but a sleeping bag, a dying laptop, and a thumb pointed toward Austin, Chris “Cleanshave” Miller hitchhikes through rural Texas and into the uneasy heart of urban homelessness. Told with gritty humor and existential insight, this isn’t just a tale of survival, it’s a meditation on freedom, invisibility, and the absurdity of modern life. From sketchy barns to late-night Whataburgers, Miller captures a side of Austin most never see, in a voice that’s both painfully honest and strangely hopeful.

A hundred miles, a trash bag full of gear, and nowhere to sleep but everywhere to think.

Thru Hiking the Oregon Coast Trail, or the OCT, is an amazing long-distance hike which runs the length of Oregon, from the Columbia River to the Oregon/California border.

My own, very rough, Quick and Dirty Oregon Coast Trail Thru Hiker’s Guide which uses the free Oregon Coast Trail Maps available from the state of Oregon.

Just be aware that the last few sections are a little thin on information as I never finished detailing this guide. Find more on the Oregon Coast Trail page.

Fixed Gear on the Southern Tier

Why not attempt to ride Coast to Coast on a $99 Walmart Fixed Gear Bicycle?

Fixed Gear on the Southern Tier is the story of my attempt to ride Coast to Coast on the Southern Tier ACA Route, riding a fixed-gear bicycle purchased from Walmart for $99.

The ACA, or Adventure Cycling Association, has an amazing set of waterproof maps that give a long-distance cyclist all the information they could possibly need for any of their routes.

Be forewarned that this is a Pulp Travel book, so there are plenty of spelling and grammar mistakes.

Homeless on the Cloverleaf is a stark, personal account of life between long-distance hikes, when the trail ends but the struggle doesn’t. Living in the wooded pocket of an I-95 cloverleaf interchange on the Massachusetts/Rhode Island border, Chris “Cleanshave” Miller documents the strange in-between of holding down a job while sleeping under overpasses, showering in gas station sinks, and planning the next escape into the wild. With highway noise as his lullaby and wanderlust in his blood, this long-lost Pulp Travel entry captures the raw edges of survival, solitude, and the absurd compromises made in pursuit of a life on foot.

Hiker Pulp, Adventure Travel Short Stories, aka Hiker Short’s, is a compilation of travel stories and articles which was compiled back in 2015. It is part personal experience and part advice for those who think living out of a backpack is a glamorous lifestyle which would solve all of their problems.

The personal stories tend to highlight the struggle I went through, and it is my hope that this helps someone out there who thinks that a lifestyle transition would be a smooth dip into a new, shiny world of infinite possibilities.

Pharming: Passive Income with Your Cell Phone was a short booklet I wrote up back in 2016. Many of the revenue-generating apps have changed over the years to the point that this guide is most likely useless to anyone interested in making money from their cell phone.

It is included here mostly for historical purposes, and because it was the idea that led to my interest in bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Something I thought was funny in retrospect, the books last words, Above all else, save that bitcoin!”

Over the Counter

An old, short movie script tucked away here in the Archive. But, it’s a PDF, and it’s free, so…

The Dog

Another old, short movie script stashed in the Archive from a long time ago.

Camp Blood 3

An old script that I finished in the year 2000. Camp Blood 1&2 were American direct-to-video slasher films, written and directed by Brad Sykes. This was written as screenwriting practice, at a time when I was extremely interested in low-budget filmmaking. Unfortunately, in 2001 Brad Sykes said that while he enjoyed my script, he had no plans for making any more Camp Blood sequels… except five more Camp Blood movies were made after 2005…
