Heading South

In the hushed confines of the trailer, I ignite candles as a feeble defense against the encroaching cold. Overhead, the distant calls of geese pierce the air, tracing their path southward, the very route I’ll embark upon come morning. The mercury is predicted to plummet below freezing, and I can’t help but relish the impending trial of my unconventional woobie and puffy pants combination, a sartorial statement that teeters on the edge of folly or perhaps something extraordinary.

But probably not the latter.

Every corner of the trailer reveals items awaiting packing or dispatch, a daunting sight. My reading list remains distressingly incomplete. Must I bear the weight of physical books through these frigid mountains when I’ve staunchly shed the burden of a sleeping bag?

Regardless of the answers, despite the boundless generosity of my family, the numbness gnawing at my toes serves as a stern reminder: it’s time to move on.
