Still camped in the trees less than half a mile behind the Paradise Valley Cafe. Halfway back to the PCT. My tent is up but nobody can see me.
Ate a burger, rehydrated, then had a vanilla milkshake. Didn’t feel like writing. Left there after sunset and set up in the trees. Not as deep as I am now but enough not to be casually observed.
The night was cool enough that I wouldn’t want it to get much worse, but not so bad that I’m not spending another night. Breakfast this morning and a full zero day.
I’d rolled my tent, sleeping bag and pad inside the olive drab tarp. Stashed that behind a bush while I ate and checked out hitchhiking spots for tomorrow. I don’t want to be too close to the restaurant but I want a lot of pullover space. Right by the PCT crossing is perfect.
Made a cardboard sign that says Palm Desert for tomorrow. I figure it’s supposed to rain Sunday and snow on Monday, (today is Thursday) so getting out of here on Friday will give me a little wiggle room in getting back to Las Vegas.
The trail north of here is cut off due to fire closure in 10 miles. The reroute is is 10 miles back down to 74, a point that is only 4 miles from here. Okay? So I skip that, then what? I’m in Idylwild for the snowstorm? Then I can’t get over San Jacinto until it melts, even then there is the fire closure on the other side.
I’d sort of planned on getting off trail for my birthday, Morongo Casino or Bear Lake Hostel, but now after looking at finances I’d just like to get my laptop and try to make some money.
I actually think it could be fun for a while, plus it’s not as cold as it was the last time I was in Vegas.
And if I wanted to I could get another ride back to California on the 28th.
