I’ve been pretty dehydrated for the last few days. The farther I walk south the hotter the days and nights become. I don’t want to eat because of the heat and a liter of water isn’t getting me as far as it used to. I ran out of water with nine more miles to go to a reliable water source, which meant puddles where there was a flowing river the last time I hiked through. But part way down the mountain I saw cow prints and patties going into a small shaded canyon. Further down the dirt became mud, and as I was about to give up hope and take a nap in the shade to avoid passing out, the faint trickling sound of water came from underneath a cluster of cattails. I drank a liter with electrolytes and hiked out two more. That I haven’t been eating is probably why I was fantasizing about food. So when a pizza place 20 miles off trail and over another set of mountains presented itself, I took the road less traveled and began the quest for pizza. Hopefully without…
