Winslow, Arizona

Standing on the corner of Winslow, Arizona at 6am on Friday the 13th, the streets were cold and silent. Despite the solitude I had to remind myself to take it easy, to lighten up while I still can. Except I’ve got a world of trouble on my mind.

“Oh we got it easy, We oughta take it easy,” I half sang out loud, continuing my walk across town, trying to get the feeling back in my frozen toes.

As I reached Tiny Thorn Ranch, my sister and mother’s microscopic homestead, a new monolithic structure dominated the landscape.

“Surprise!” My mom said, proud to show off what she built. A brand new shed. Built not with her hands or power tools, but with her intelligence, credit score and determination. No easy task in this resource limited landscape.

My sister had also made a change, eager to introduce me to her new lifelong companion, Buddy.

With my sister and her growing guard dog to protect the perimeter, and an antique rocking chair inside the shed, my mom could now safely control all of reality with her mind. Or at least enjoy a quiet morning coffee with the door open to the rising sun.

After two years of existing in the land of the lost, it felt like they were finally starting to live again, and I felt an overwhelming sense of pride for both of them. With the solar eclipse almost directly overhead, it seemed like a profoundly auspicious start to a new chapter in their lives.
