Hiked in for the cheeseburgers at the Pine something Lodge, Pine House Tavern? Maybe Pine House Cafe? Anyway, I heard they were some of the best along the trail. Only they don’t open until 5pm on Thursdays, and are only open for 2 hours.
Instead I settled on a half a gallon of milk and a box of Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies instead. $10.00
At least the owner plugged my phone in behind the counter to let it charge. Can’t imagine what he must have to put up with during the busy season and hikers en masse pleading for an outlet.
Freezing last night. This sleeping bag situation has to change.
Passed a hiker heading south this morning. Said he was a thru hiker but after how cold the night was he was calling it quits.
“I’ll come back in May.”
His name was “Grizzle”, and apparently he was the one who left the smoldering campfire where I stopped the night before. Not even a mile up the trail after I’d met him I could smell another fire. The fire ring where he had camped the night before was still smoking. Without water or enough dirt I stirred it up and dropped a huge boulder on it that covered most of the ring.
After eating the cookies I retired to the visitors center bathrooms with a coke and a bag of chili cheese Frito’s to further charge my phone and backup battery. Sat in the sun pretty much doing nothing. Watching tourists frantically heading towards the bathrooms. One older guy had to go so bad, and made the mistake of thinking the bathrooms were up at the top. By the time he got down to the actual bathrooms his pants were half off and his ass was hanging out.
Not a pretty sight.
