Mileage that took three hours to run in, took four days to retrace on the way out of Oro Valley.
The first night I’d slipped behind the glow of In-N-Out and disappeared into Big Wash, cowboy camped in the quiet of a place not meant for staying. Then somewhere above Catalina State Park, I stopped pretending I was going anywhere. Lights flickered below, a reminder that somewhere, the world was still populated with people doing important things.
Not me.
Sun on my chest, rock warm against my back, chocolate melting slow on my tongue from marked down Easter candy, listening to the soft gurgling of water slowly carving its way through solid rock. I camped at Romero Pools for two nights that went by in the blink of an eye. No schedule to interrupt it. No reason to leave.
Days slipped by unnoticed until I ran out of food.
